FOR ONCE, Hilda had actually shown one of Genevieve’s appointments back to her office. Of course she hadn’t bothered announcing it, but fortunately Genevieve’s ears were sharp and she’d heard them approaching.

Collin, on the other hand, had clearly been taken by surprise, nearly falling off the desk as he whirled toward the doorway. He seemed guilty, like they’d been caught doing something they shouldn’t have been. But if they really were engaged, they should flirt. And more...

He’d been about to kiss her.

Had she wanted him to?

Her stomach tightened with nerves and frustration as she realized she had. She’d really wanted that kiss. She should have been glad that they’d been interrupted before that had happened, before she let herself start thinking this engagement was real. That the marriage, if they went through with it, would be real.

“Mrs. Finch is here,” Hilda said, and she was smiling, which was probably the first time she had smiled at Genevieve. Despite the couple of months Genevieve had been with the law practice, the receptionist hadn’t warmed up to her.

“Thank you, Hilda,” Genevieve said with a smile of her own as she stood up. “And thank you for finding time to meet with us, Mrs. Finch. I’m sure you’re very busy.”

Hilda hesitated a moment before turning to walk out. But she closed the door behind herself so it wasn’t as if she’d been nosy about the meeting. It was almost as if she’d known what it was about...

Had Sadie spoken to her? Genevieve knew Collin had called his grandmother and confirmed their plan; he’d been with her, in her kitchen, when he’d called Ranch Haven.

Genevieve needed to call there herself, not for Sadie, but for Baker and Taye, to apologize and assure them herself that she didn’t intend to fight the adoption.

“I am quite busy, as Dr. Cassidy knows,” Mrs. Finch replied. “So I don’t know why he’s engaged a lawyer to talk to me, but I assume it’s about Bailey Ann.”

“It is,” Collin said.

“But I’m not here as a lawyer,” Genevieve added. “Collin isn’t a client. He’s my fiancé.”

Mrs. Finch’s brow furrowed. “You didn’t mention that when you asked me about fostering Bailey Ann.”

“I didn’t want to speak for Genevieve,” he said.

And that was probably quite open and honest of him. A smile twitched her lips. “Collin wanted to make sure that I was onboard for a child with special needs. I’m already a certified foster parent.”

“I’m aware,” Mrs. Finch said. She must have checked out Genevieve after she’d called her to meet. “But you haven’t accepted any placements yet. We can’t authorize your first one being a child with complex medical needs. You’d need more experience first.”

Genevieve had expected this. “I’m marrying someone who knows everything about Bailey Ann’s medical history and her current condition as well as her future needs,” she pointed out, and she stepped closer to Collin.

He slid his arm around her waist, showing a united front. A unit. A couple.

She didn’t know if she’d ever really felt like half of a whole before.
